Theme Infection is developing vaccines for poverty-related and emerging infections, as well as identifying novel drug targets to block viral and bacterial replication.

Diagnostics of emerging and poverty-related diseases

Theme Infection is pursuing innovations in diagnostics through Next-Generation Sequencing, Artificial Intelligence, and point-of-care tests with a focus on emerging and poverty-related infections.

Infection immunology

Our research explores the physiological, immunological, metabolic, and cellular interactions between the human host and viruses, bacteria, and parasites, while also considering the context of the microbiome and the relationship with non-communicable diseases.

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and Microbiome

Addressing optimal antibacterial and antifungal therapy strategies and novel approaches to combat the "slow pandemic" of AMR is central to this focus area.

Technology Platforms, Epidemiology & Data Science

The subthemes Technology Platforms and Epidemiology & Data Science are covering the modern toolbox that researchers need for their studies. Technology Platforms provide state-of-the-art lab-based technologies to increase research speed and accuracy, and deliver groundbreaking new insights, while the subtheme Epidemiology & Data Science, focuses on data collection, processing, and analysis.

For PhDs and Postdocs

Many PhD students and postdocs are working on projects that are part of Theme Infection within the LUMC and beyond. We organize an advanced (PhD) course on Infection and Immunity (the last two weeks of January). We welcome new members, who can contact us through infection@lumc.nl. We also welcome those who are looking for a PhD student or postdoc position to reach out to us.

Information on mandatory, highly recommended and other relevant but not mandatory courses are presented here. You can browse through all the known courses. You can filter for courses relevant for the 10 LUMC Research Themes, and you can also search using keywords. Information such as the number of study credits (EC), the course duration, study year, website and background information are provided when known. Feedback on missing courses, incorrect or outdated information is welcome.

For Students

Theme Infection organizes courses which are part of the bachelor’s and master’s programs of Biomedical Sciences and Medicine at the Leiden University Medical Center. Theme Infection also offers national and international courses, workshops, and trainings.

There are frequent opportunities for students to undertake shorter or longer research projects in the field of infectious diseases within the LUMC. Please contact us via infection@lumc.nl and describe your background and interests.
