Leiden University Center for Infectious Diseases (LUCID)

LUCID is where we treat our patients and ensure their well being. Through innovative diagnostics and patient care as well as cutting edge research and education we strive to contribute to the prevention and cure of infectious diseases in our hospital, in our region and in the Netherlands. As infections have no borders, we bundle our efforts to combat infectious diseases worldwide.
Patient care

In 50 years, infectious diseases are projected to be the number one cause of death as a result of growing antibiotic resistance, pandemics, climate change, and migration. LUCID includes leading clinicians and (basic and clinical) researchers, who work together to prevent and cure infectious diseases in individuals and populations, locally, nationally and internationally.

We pay particular attention to connect clinical and fundamental research more efficiently, and to disseminate our knowledge and vision through educational activities. We stimulate a collegial working environment where people join forces to focus on recognizing and supporting (young) talent in healthcare, education and research.

Research and Education

Pathogens & Drugs

This cluster aims to enhance our understanding of pathogen biology and pathogen-host interactions at the molecular, cellular, tissue and organismal level.

Detect & Act

This cluster aims to improve detection of pathogens as well as host biomarkers in diagnostic settings, to enable timely patient treatment and infection control measurements at a global level.

Innovative Vaccinology

This cluster aims to improve the impact of vaccinations against infectious diseases worldwide, and to contribute to the development of novel vaccines against bacterial, parasitic and viral infections.

Microbiome & Health

The human microbiome is a complex ecosystem of microorganisms that colonise and interact with our body. The focus of this cluster is to assess how the microbiome determines health and disease.

About us

The Leiden Controlled Human Infections Center

Clinical studies in which healthy volunteers are infected with micro-organisms and parasites under highly controlled conditions are extremely important to develop novel medicine and vaccines.

The Microbiome Analysis Intitiative

The LUMC’s Center for Microbiome Analysis and Therapeutics (CMAT) facilitates all aspects of Microbiome research; from study design, sampling, DNA extraction and sequencing to data analysis and interpretation.

The Tuberculosis Research Center

Tuberculosis research at LUMC aims to resolve the huge need for better vaccines, biomarkers and diagnostic tests for tuberculosis.

CITRI provides expertise in the management of travel and import infections and contributes to control and elimination of poverty-related infections worldwide.
