Epidemiology is the study of disease in humans. It started after the epidemics that occurred in the past, when epidemiologists began studying disease patterns. In more recent times, the field expanded to modern ‘epidemics’, such as cancer and heart disease. Nowadays, epidemiology can focus on any disease. Because people all differ in genetics and behaviour, epidemiologic studies often include many people (100s to 1000s) and the specialty has a strong focus on methodology and statistics.
