Are you a patient from within the EU?

Foreign patients from within the European Union can be treated at the LUMC when they have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

Are you a patient from outside the EU?

Patients from outside the European Union require a guarantee from their insurer.

Are you a foreign national without a residence permit?

In the Netherlands foreign nationals without a residence permit cannot conclude a health insurance.

Foreign nationals without a residence permit are divided into 2 categories:

• Asylum seekers: foreign nationals who have applied for a residence permit or foreign nationals who have appealed against a negative decision on a residence permit application.
• Uninsurable foreign nationals: foreign nationals residing illegally in the Netherlands.

Are you an asylum seeker?

During the asylum procedure asylum seekers are assisted by the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (Centraal Orgaan opvang Asielzoekers, COA). During the asylum procedure asylum seekers are insured in accordance with the Asylum Seekers Healthcare Regulations (Regeling Zorg Asielzoekers, RZA). Under these regulations asylum seekers are entitled to reimbursement of treatment as included in the Dutch basic healthcare insurance, with the exception of treatment for transsexuality, in-vitro fertilisation and all similar forms of treatment. At the LUMC asylum seekers can receive treatment if they show their RZA card. Furthermore, like all other insured persons, they require a referral from a GP, dentist, obstetrician, etc. for specialist medical treatment.

Are you an uninsurable foreign national?

Illegal foreign nationals cannot get a medical insurance in the Netherlands. Therefore, they have to pay for any medical costs themselves. If the costs cannot be paid, the LUMC can submit the costs to the Central Administration Office (CAK) (NL).
