Introduction
The focus in my daily practice as a Clinical Microbiologist is on bacteriology and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC). I was trained at the UMC Utrecht and obtained my PhD at the RU Utrecht. Within LUMC I am head of the IP unit and chairman of the Infection Prevention Committee. Also I am deputy head of LUCID MM&IP and a member of the executive Board of the Staff Convention of the LUMC.
Nationally, I am active as chairman of the HIP working group of the NVMM and as chairman of the curative care working group of the national platform Preparedness group A+ diseases of the RIVM. Based on my expertise, I am involved in creating and assessing various national guidelines and policies for the prevention and control of infectious diseases at SRI and LCI.

Scientific research
My fields of interest are the role of the environment in the spread of multidrug resistant micro-organisms (MDRO); duration and risk factors for MDRO carriership; interventions to reduce healthcare associated infections & AMR and to increase adherence to infection control measurements; ICT tools for the reduction, prediction and (semi) automatic surveillance of health care associated infections; preparedness and infection control management of new and severe infectious diseases; IPC & sustainability.
