Introduction
I am associate professor in Clinical Virology and have obtained three master degrees at the Leiden University: Biomedical Science, Medicine, and Clinical Epidemiology B. This background profile enables me to bridge clinical, translational, and fundamental research.
I am chair and co-initiator of the European Society of Clinical Virology (ESCV) Network on Next-Generation-Sequencing (ENNGS) since 2018, aiming at implementation of NGS in clinical diagnostic laboratories, chair of the Dutch Working group for Clinical Virology (NWKV), and member of the executive board of the Netherlands Centre for One Health (NCOH).

Scientific research
Since 2016 I am leading a group working on Clinical Viral Metagenomics. Other topics of study are the human virome in health and disease, intra-host virus evolution, viral resistance, typing, and virus discovery by (meta)genomics. One of the aims is to improve virus identification in undiagnosed patients suspected of an infectious disease. This includes all adjacent aspects including causality assessments using cases and controls, design of healthy control databases, virus-host transcriptomics, and assessment of virus discovery tools contributing to Pandemic Preparedness. I was one of the driving forces behind the challenging implementation of this state-of-the-art technique viral metagenomics as clinical service, with LUMC being one of the frontiers in Europe.
