Associate Professor and LUCID Education Coordinator

Area(s) of expertise:
Molecular Virology and Innate Immune evasion, Education Infectious Diseases
Introduction
My group is investigating the interaction of +RNA viruses (coronaviruses and flaviviruses) with the innate immune system. We focus on viral innate immune evasive functions and how these manipulate the cell and the infection. We are interested in applying the gained knowledge on virus-host interactions to design and develop vaccines and antiviral agents. To do this work thoroughly and at a high level, I have set up a laboratory system for DM3 level virus infections in mice, which is well used and successful.

I am interested in teaching and ensuring that the in-depth knowledge gained through research is used in different education formats for our students (BSc, MSc and PhD). I aim to build on the strengths of LUCID and the link between clinicians and scientists to develop new education modules that will yield a new generation of professionals in the area of infectious diseases.

I have taken on the role of Education Coordinator within LUCID to lead education-related activities.
Scientific research
Our research on viral proteases that manipulate innate immunity and possibly other cellular mechanisms, has helped us to design new (modified live virus) vaccine candidates against coronaviruses. In parallel the general knowledge gained on the interaction between RNA+ Viruses and the innate immune system is being used to design novel antivirals. This resulted in several industry grants such as with MSD Animal Health and Janssen Vaccines and Therapeutics (JnJ) as well as international EU funded and CEPI funded grants.

Besides research, I have a passion for university teaching, and education of lay audiences, about infectious diseases and vaccination.
