Introduction
I am a molecular biologist with a broad expertise in the pathophysiology of metabolic disorders. I’ve done my PhD in the field of bioenergetics at the University of Grenoble (France) with Prof. Dr. Xavier Leverve, followed by a postdoc at the de Duve institute in Brussels (Belgium) in the group of Prof. Dr. Louis Hue. I joined the LUMC in 2007 where I’m working as a principal investigator since 2010. My research group is driving projects within the field of immunometabolism aiming to identify new druggable molecules and/or molecular targets involved in the immune regulation of metabolic homeostasis in the context of obesity, MAFLD/MASH, type 2 diabetes and infection. I am also involved in several international collaborations on multidisciplinary projects dealing with metabolic disorders and helminth infection. I have co-authored >120 publications (h-index:51) and am serving as external reviewer for multiple journals (>180 manuscripts) and national/EU funding agencies (>160 grants).
Scientific research
My group mainly focused on studying the molecular mechanisms underlying the immune-mediated regulation of metabolic homeostasis, notably by parasites and their molecules, using both in vitro and in vivo approaches in various rodent models or in humans. This research line is aimed to identify new molecules and/or potential novel molecular targets involved in tissue-specific regulation of glucose/lipid metabolism and insulin sensitivity that can ultimately lead to future therapeutic opportunities for the treatment of metabolic disorders and hyperinflammatory diseases.
