Area(s) of expertise:
Clinical Virologist
Introduction
I am heading LUCID Medical Microbiology and Infection Prevention with the main task of contributing to complex patient care within LUMC. As a clinical virologist, in my daily practice I am involved in diagnostic processes, training our residents and consultations.
I studied medicine at the Leiden University and did my PhD in transplantation immunology at the Erasmus Medical Center, after which I specialized in Medical Microbiology.
I am the leader of the LUMC expertise center for rare prenatal and congenital infections. Internationally, I am president of the European congenital CMV initiative.
Scientific research
My research interest is in congenital infections, in particular congenital CMV infection. The research includes the epidemiology of cCMV, the disease burden in the Netherlands, optimizing neonatal diagnostics, a national trial on antiviral treatment of neonates with cCMV, the pathogenesis of cCMV and prognostic markers for the clinical outcome of cCMV.
With my clinical team, we would like to determine the time of infection during pregnancy by looking at viral and immunological markers in the newborn to enable us to initiate effective treatment and prevent the adverse impact on the newborn.
