Respiratory depression
The department of Anesthesiology has active research groups that focus on studies on the improvement of perioperative outcome, acute and chronic pain, opioid epidemiology, ventilatory control and pharmacology of opioids and anesthetics, including psychedelics (ketamine) and muscle relaxants.
Various drugs and conditions may lead to potential respiratory depression. The department of Anesthesiology studies the occurrence of respiratory depression and develops novel strategies to overcome and prevent respiratory depression from opioids and anesthetics.
We collaborate with the US FDA on opioid pharmacology nd reversal of opioid-induced respiratory depression.
