Professor Internal Medicine, Department Head Internal Medicine

Prof. Dr. A.J. (Ton) Rabelink

Area(s) of expertise:
Nephrology
Introduction
I am currently Professor of Internal Medicine and Nephrologist at the LUMC. Here, I also head the department of Internal Medicine. I am the Leiden Node Director of the Novo Nordisk Foundation for Stem Cell Medicine, reNEW and am the figurehead of the theme Regenerative Medicine within the Dutch National Science Agenda.

Previous career:
I received my MD PhD degree at Utrecht University, where I also completed my residency and fellowships in internal medicine and nephrology before joining the staff there . I became a professor by special installment from the Dutch Kidney Foundation in 1998, after which I was installed as professor by Utrecht University in 2000. Subsequently, I was appointed chairman of medicine in the University Hospital Utrecht from 1999 to 2004. In 2004, I moved to Leiden University Medical Center.
Scientific research
Since joining the LUMC, my group has focused on the development of regenerative therapies to treat chronic kidney disease. Renal diseases are a global health concern and the limited treatment options for end-stage kidney disease have remained unchanged for decades. My research group aims to grow and regenerate kidney tissue ex vivo. Such kidney tissues could potentially provide an alternative source for transplantation of renal tissue to treat patients with end-stage renal failure.

To this end, my research group combines expertise in endothelial cell biology, human stem cell biology and multi-omics approaches to gain knowledge on developmental cues that drive kidney development and regeneration. We specifically focus on the roles that renal cell metabolism and metabolite exchange in kidney tissue play in these processes. We don’t only study this from a fundamental angle, but are committed to also use this knowledge to further the development of novel therapies for chronic kidney diseases.
