Introduction
The commission of the chair of MGJ de Boer is ‘antimicrobial resistance and antibiotic stewardship’, and in Dutch: ‘Antimicrobiële resistentie & Antibioticabeleid’. He was trained as an internist & infectious disease specialist, and later also trained and registered as a clinical epidemiologist. Since 2019 he am the chair of the Stichting Werkgroep Antibioticabeleid (acronym SWAB), www.swab.nl. This organization is responsible for the guidelines on treatment of infectious diseases, implementation of antimicrobial resistance, and monitoring of antimicrobial use and resistance in the Dutch hospitals. Over the past years we used a wide array of methods to study the topic specified above from diverse angles, ranging from world-wide surveys to randomized clinical trials, to developing an in-vitro-model to study alternative treatments for implant associated infection. Wherever possible, we seek to connect clinical or epidemiological observations with a more experimental approach.
Scientific research
Research focuses on the evolving epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in clinically relevant micro-organisms, on understanding the impact on health and disease of this ongoing process, and on the consequences of increasing AMR for (new) antimicrobial strategies, antibiotic policy making and antibiotic stewardship.
