Introduction
Dr. Edouard Fu is senior researcher at LUMC, editor at NDT, and in training to become MD. He has training in causal inference, clinical epidemiology and pharmacoepidemiology. Edouard completed a postdoc at Harvard, and received his PhD in 2021 cum laude for the thesis “Optimal cardiovascular treatment strategies in kidney disease”. He has been awarded prestigious grants to pursue his research, including a personal Rubicon and VENI grant from the Dutch Research Council and a Junior Kolff Grant from the Dutch Kidney Foundation (total €874.000). His main research focuses on determining the effectiveness and safety of treatments in patients with kidney and cardiovascular disease, applying state-of-the art causal inference methods to routinely collected “big” healthcare data. He is a frequently invited speaker, e.g. at Harvard, Karolinska Institute, Aarhus University, Johns Hopkins and UCL. Thus far, his work has informed 5 international clinical practice guidelines and position statements.
Scientific research
Dr. Fu leads several large pharmacoepidemiologic studies and is starting a research line on personalized medicine in the cardiorenal field. He has used target trial emulation to determine the cardiorenal effects of ACEi/ARB, MRA, DOACs, SGLT2i and GLP1-RA, as well as the timing of dialysis initiation. He has published over 65 articles in general medical journals (JAMA, BMJ, Annals of Internal Medicine) and specialty journals in nephrology (JASN, Kidney Int) and cardiology (European Heart Journal, European Journal of Heart Failure). In addition, he has written educational articles to make advanced methods accessible for clinicians.
