Clinical Guideline Development in Endocrinology

Guidelines are central to optimise and harmonise patient care. To appraise and summarise available evidence is the backbone of guideline development. However, appraisal of available evidence is challenging, especially in the context of rare diseases or in the absence of firm evidence from randomized trials.
In these situations, which is common in endocrinology, excellent methodological appraisal of the evidence is crucial for guideline development.

Ambition

The department of Clinical Epidemiology will methodological support for Clinical Guidelines development from the:

  • European Society of Endocrinology
  • Endo-ERN (European rare disease network of Endocrine Conditions)

Position in international context and achievements

The department of Clinical Epidemiology of the LUMC  is involved in development of clinical guidelines for the European Society of Endocrinology since 2014. Guidelines have been published on, amongst others, hypoparathyroidism, adrenal incidentalomas adrenocortical carcinomas. These guidelines are published in the European Journal of Endocrinology. Future guidelines will cover corticosteroid substitution treatment, and hormone replacement therapy and cardiovascular risk management.

The European Reference Network on Endocrinology (Endo-ERN) has currently started to develop and publish guidelines in close collaboration with the department. The first guideline published on pubertal induction in congenital reproductive hormone deficiency was published in the European Journal of Endocrinology (2022).
