Orthopedic surgeon in training, postdoctoral researcher

Dr. B. (Banne) Németh, MD, PhD

Area(s) of expertise:
Orthopedic surgery, Clinical epidemiology, Venous thromboembolism
Introduction
Banne Németh is a postdoctoral researcher at the department of Clinical Epidemiology since 2022 , he combines his orthopedic surgery residency with research. He completed his medical training in 2014 at the Leiden University Medical Center and in 2020, he obtained his doctoral degree with honor on the subject “Venous thrombosis following lower-leg cast immobilization and knee arthroscopy. From a population-based approach to individualized therapy”. In 2019 he worked as a visiting researcher at King’s College in London. Dr. Németh currently works as the principal investigator of a large randomized controlled trial (~10.000 patients).
Scientific research
Banne Németh’s research primarily focusses on the prevention and prediction of venous thromboembolism following orthopedic interventions (such as a total hip or knee replacement, or following immobilization of the extremities). He is currently the principal investigator of a large Dutch multicenter RCT, the DISTINCT study (inDividual, targeted thrombosIS prophylaxis versus the standard ‘one size fits all’ approach in patients undergoing Total hIp or total kNee replaCemenT: a national, multicenter, randomized, multi-arm, open-label trial).
