About your role
As a Research Software Trainer, you help identify the training needs of researchers, research software engineers, and data scientists. You collaborate closely with colleagues involved in data stewardship training, software policies, and tool development to ensure a consistent training approach. You design and deliver tailored training modules and hands-on workshops for diverse audiences with varying skill levels. Additionally, you evaluate and improve training materials and courses to maintain high standards of quality and effectiveness.
Your top-4 tasks are:
- Develop and provide training and workshops on research software and software management.
- Align with internal and external training initiatives such as the eScience Center, Health-RI, and ELIXIR TeSS.
- Contribute to expanding the research software training capacity at LUMC and promoting best practices in open research software.
- Coordinate with colleagues working on software management policies and tools to align training content accordingly.
Through your efforts, you ensure that researchers and developers acquire the knowledge and skills needed to create high-quality, FAIR research software.
About your workplace
You will work in the Advanced Data Management (ADM) section of the Biomedical Data Sciences department. ADM is a central facility for research data stewardship, offering support throughout the research data life cycle and contributing to new developments in clinical research. Key principles include FAIR data, Good Research Practice (GRP), and safe processing of personal data. ADM collaborates within and outside LUMC to implement a FAIR data infrastructure. The tools and services developed will help researchers and healthcare professionals make health data and research software FAIR for both humans and machines. ADM is building this infrastructure with partners in the LUMC Data Competence Center (DCC) and Health-RI. The DCC aims to improve data quality and efficiency and promote the reuse of data, software, and expertise.
About you
You can effectively explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences. You tailor your communication to your audience, making training sessions engaging and accessible. You work in a structured manner, managing multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining oversight. You actively seek opportunities to keep your knowledge up to date and refine training methods. Collaboration with colleagues and experts comes naturally to you, and you ensure that training content remains accurate and relevant.
Furthermore, you have:
- A completed higher vocational (HBO) or university (WO) degree.
- Experience with programming languages such as Python, R, SQL, and JavaScript, preferably with web development.
- Knowledge of best practices in software development, including version control (GitLab/GitHub), branching strategies, testing frameworks, licensing, and documentation.
- Experience developing and deploying software in Linux, MacOS, and Windows environments, as well as working with reproducible research tools like notebooks and containers.
- Familiarity with FAIR/FAIR4RS principles, relevant regulations such as GDPR, MDR, and ISO 27001, and experience in writing Software Management Plans (SMPs).
- Experience with project management tools and preferably with e-learning platforms and virtual training tools.
