Occupational disability insurance

Should you become (partially) unfit for work, your income may decrease, also when receiving an occupational disability benefit. In order to minimize this risk you may take out a supplementary insurance from Loyalis: the Occupational Disability Insurance (Arbeidsongeschiktheidsverzekering, AOV). LUMC staff members will get a discount on this insurance.

When you have been on sick leave for more than 2 years your contract will be discontinued but you may be entitled to an occupational disability benefit (WIA benefit) and an ABP Incapacity Pension. Despite these benefits your income will almost always decrease. With the Occupational Disability Insurance (AOV) it is possible to take out supplementary insurance against this risk. Moreover, you continue to accrue pension over the portion of your income that you insure.

How does AOV Work?

You may choose from three different coverages:

  • decrease in income due to partial occupational disability;
  • decrease in income due to full occupational disablity;
  • decrease in income due  to both partial and full occupational disablity.

The Loyalis website offers more information about these coverages and their criteria. You can also do a test to get an impression of what the financial consequences of occupational diability might be for you.

The AOV is a supplementary insurance for which you pay the contribution yourself. The LUMC has reached agreement with Loyalis on a lower contribution compared to other insurers. The level of the contribution depends on the cover you choose. If you wish to calculate your contribution please refer to the Loyalis website.
