Insurance, child benefit and pension
Important to know
If you live and work in the Netherlands, you are insured under Dutch legislation. You will no longer be insured in the country where you used to live or work.
Pension
You will start receiving AOW pension at the age of 67. You will also build up a LUMC pension under the ABP. Premiums for AOW and your ABP pension will be deducted from your salary. You may also find it useful to top up your pension.
Health Insurance
Everyone living and/or working in the Netherlands is required to have at least basic health insurance. You are free to choose your own health insurance company. You can also change insurers once a year.
As an employee of LUMC, you and your family members are covered by the UMC health insurance plan. This is a group health insurance plan that the University Medical Center has established for all employees. UMC Health Insurance offers you a basic plan and several supplemental plans and deductibles.
Child benefit
Do you live and work in the Netherlands and have children under the age of 18? If so, you may be entitled to child benefit, a quarterly contribution from the Sociale Verzekeringsbank (SVB) towards your child's or children's education. The amount of the benefit depends on the number of children in your household, any special needs, etc. Child benefit does not depend on your income. For more information, go to www.svb.nl.
Survivor benefits and survivor pensions
The survivor benefit and survivor pension provide financial support from the government to people whose partner has died and to children who have been orphaned. As an LUMC employee, you will automatically build up a survivor pension under the ABP. This entitles your partner and children under 21 to a benefit in the event of your death. You can also take out survivor insurance yourself. Visit www.svb.nl for more information, brochures and forms.
Other insurances
LUMC has agreements with insurance companies for discounts and premiums. These apply to all employees and are part of the benefits package. It is up to you to decide whether or not to take advantage of these benefits.
