Description
Death re-enlightened: the existential role of mortality in art and science
In honour of the retirement of Dries van Dam, curator of the LUMC Anatomical Museum, the symposium ‘Death re-enlightened: the existential role of mortality in art and science’ is being organised.
The symposium broadly re-examines the existential and connecting role of death in art and science. Particular attention will be paid to Vanitas and the related developments in dissection, preparation and conservation, which enabled the creation of extensive scientific collections for study and wonder.
The symposium will highlight from different disciplines how this relationship with our mortality has developed.
