Leiden University Center for Infectious Diseases (LUCID)

Through innovative diagnostics and patient care as well as cutting edge research and education we strive to contribute to the prevention and cure of infectious diseases in our hospital, in our region and in the Netherlands. As infections have no borders, we bundle our efforts to combat infectious diseases worldwide.
Patiëntenzorg

Department of Medical Microbiology and Infection Prevention (LUCID MMIP)

This subdepartment of LUCID is responsible for pathogen diagnostics and Infection Prevention at LUMC. Our department forms the bridge between laboratory, research, and clinic and offers (reference) diagnostics, clinical consultation and education. The Dutch Donor Feces Bank is part of our department.

Department of Infectious Diseases (LUCID INZI)

This subdepartment combines patient care with scientific research. The Infectious Diseases Department is an indispensable link in the highly complex care of patients with viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic infections. The patient is always our priority and receives the best possible care. Our top referral functions and training are the basis for organizing leading patient care.

Research

Fundamental and translational research are the main drivers for innovations in strategies for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infections. At LUCID we continuously develop and apply new knowledge and cutting-edge technologies through collaborative research of scientists and clinicians to strive to excellence in contributing to the prevention and cure of infectious diseases in our hospital, in our region and the world.

Pathogens & Drugs

This cluster aims to enhance our understanding of pathogen biology and pathogen-host interactions at the molecular, cellular, tissue and organismal level.

Detect & Act

This cluster aims to improve detection of pathogens as well as host biomarkers in diagnostic settings, to enable timely patient treatment and infection control measurements at a global level.

Innovative Vaccinology

This cluster aims to improve the impact of vaccinations against infectious diseases worldwide, and to contribute to the development of novel vaccines against bacterial, parasitic and viral infections.

Microbiome & Health

The human microbiome is a complex ecosystem of microorganisms that colonise and interact with our body. The focus of this cluster is to assess how the microbiome determines health and disease.

Infection Immunology

Understanding host pathogen interaction is crucial in the combat against infectious diseases and forms the basis for novel (host directed) therapies and innovative vaccines.
