Prof. dr S.C. (Suzanne) Cannegieter

I am a clinical epidemiologist with a particular interest in thrombosis and haemostasis. I studied medicine and completed a PhD thesis on optimal anticoagulant treatment in Leiden and obtained a MSc in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. I combine a strong methodological background with pathophysiological and clinical knowledge and apply this to a wide range of topics. Hence, my studies range from etiology of venous thromboembolism to establishing its optimal prevention and therapy, but also concern general aspects of anticoagulant treatment and bleeding disorders.
I am involved in several national multicenter studies as principal investigator, work package leader or methodological advisor. Furthermore, in line with my general background into methodology of clinical studies, I advise colleagues on study design and analysis.
I combine my methodological expertise with my knowledge on thrombosis and haemostasis in my role as co-Editor in Chief of the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis.

I am a professor of Clinical Epidemiology at the Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands. My research focuses on venous thrombo-embolism, with a particular interest in its etiology, as well as in establishing optimal prevention and therapy. I am involved in several national multicenter studies as PI, WP leader or methodological advisor.
Some examples of topics include the relation between venous thrombosis and orthopaedic surgery, cardiovascular disease, cancer, air travel, female risk factors, endocrine hormones, infection and risk factors for recurrent thrombosis. Knowledge on these risk factors is further used to develop risk prediction models for high risk situations. These models are again used in randomised clinical trials, of which I am PI, into optimal thrombosis prophylaxis for patients with a high thrombosis risk (i.e., with lower leg immobilisation or knee arthroscopy, knee or hip replacement and patients with a history of thrombosis).
