Prof. dr. J.G. (Anske) van der Bom, MD, PhD

Johanna (Anske) G. van der Bom studied medicine in Leiden. Following this, she served as a resident internal medicine in the Groene Hart Hospital in Gouda. At Erasmus University, Rotterdam, she earned a master's degree in Clinical Epidemiology (1995) and a PhD (1997). She served as a clinical epidemiologist at the University Medical Center Utrecht before being appointed as an associate professor at Leiden University Medical Center in 2003. She was a visiting scholar at Harvard School of Public Health (2004) and the University of Washington (2008) and a visiting professor at the Universidade de Minas Gerais in Brazil (2015-2018). From 2011 to 2021 Dr van der Bom directed the Center for Clinical Transfusion Research at Sanquin/LUMC. In 2013 she was appointed as a professor of Clinical Epidemiology; inaugural lecture "Waar is de beste dokter?". She assumed the role of member-methodologist of the Central Committee on Research Involving Human Subjects(CCMO) in 2020 and joined Health Campus The Hague staff in 2023.

Throughout her scientific career, van der Bom has strived to uncover insights that inform evidence-based decision-making in healthcare. Advancements in technology and methodology have propelled the field forward, offering new avenues for data documentation, analysis, and dissemination. Leveraging these innovations, she has contributed to the development of applied knowledge, mainly in the field of bleeding disorders and blood transfusion, supporting health professionals and patients alike to make informed choices regarding their health(care). The challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic have underscored the importance of epidemiological research in guiding public health responses and policy decisions. As we navigate the post-pandemic landscape, she is committed to leveraging her expertise to drive evidence-based strategies for healthcare delivery, prevention, and population health management. In all endeavors, her ultimate goal remains unchanged: adding tangible value, whether in the form of improved patient outcomes, optimized healthcare delivery, or enhanced population health.
